I did this painting shortly after the one of Orkid spyhopping. Keet's also an orca at Sea World of California. In this painting he's doing a behavior called a "bow." It's done in acrylic on canvas board from a photo I took. I really like how the splashes turned out.
Nice drawing, but Im not to fond of seeing orca's in captividy.. not a single orca has ever lived half as long as they would in the wild.. even corky, seaworld's 'shamu' is near death, blind in one eye, kidnies and liver failing. yet there still forceing her to do thos dumb show's while her famaly still swim's free in the wild. orca's live up to 90 years in the wild. yet in captividy, there hasn't been a single one to even make it to 40. most hardly reach there 20's.
Several male orcas have made it to the average life expectancy for male orcas. (25 years. This information was derived from the orca catalog.)
Corky is not near death. She has a cataract in one eye, which has nothing to do with anything. Marine mammals such as seals and sea lions commonly get them in the wild and fall prey to some predator because of it. She does not have liver failure or kidney failure.
As far as her family goes... her mother died in 2000. Her younger brother, who she never met, died in 2001.
The average age of death for a female orca in the Pacific Northwest is forty. (Also derived from the orca catalog dates of death. We added them all up.) Yes, they can live longer, but that's the average age.
And as far as "there hasn't been a single one even to make it to 40..." - Tokitae is forty years old. Corky will be forty next year.
EEEE!!! OMG!!! I didn't think it possible I'd ever find anybody who knew the actual names of some of the Sea World Orcas!!! I went to one of their Adventure camps at the park when I was 16 down in San Antonio, and Keet was my favorite little guy out of them cause he was such a cute little baby. :3 Haida was really pushy though! And yus, he's doing well, and I love this painting of him! :: dances for finally being able to find a fellow orca nut :: So how did you get to know them so well? :3 :: adds you to devwatch :: >.>

Great photo. I know the names of the orcas down here in Texas. They are:Kayla,Ky, and Keto (My favorite) There was another one. Winnie. He died cuz someone threw coins in his tank and he ate them. (Atleast thats what I heard) I have to agree with kurisutaru. Orcas are not meant to be in a tank.
