Argh, I'm so easily annoyed. So here's the story for this one.

First off, it's one of those "Better looking if viewed from a distance" things. I'm practicing with Prismacolors again, and I'm frustrated because colored pencils really aren't my thing. Yet. I'm still hoping. Advice and tips GREATLY appreciated.

Lot of blending frustration. Lot of frustration with sharpening, since the tips snap off so easily. It was hard to get detail, especially with the eye. (Which didn't scan well anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.) If you have a sharpening tip for these things, share and I'll give you a cookie. ;) (Wink)

Frustration with the scanner, which was doing weird stupid things with it. Too dark, too red, just plain wrong period. Tweaked it in Photoshop, but it still doesn't resemble the original. = Colors are off and I can't get them right.

*sulks*

I might try another humpback whale at a later date, since the humpbacks are my favorite of the great whales.

Used a photograph by Tsuneo Nakamura for my model.

I can't believe you did this in pencil!! I thought it was an oil painting or something. This is wonderful! I can't believe you don't like it!! Though now that I look at it in full view, I can see the pencil...but still!! This is amazing!!! Eyepopping

Wow, NICE and solid coloring, very lovely, its a wonder to see a nice pencil piece done like this. ^^ LOve the beautiful details on the whale, I really appreciate the beautiful and careful rendering you have here. Beauty is the word for it.
somehow i find the need to see the tale longer, but thats a small problem. ^^

I'm impressed by how rich the colors are-- I just started using colored pencils recently and I certainly haven't gotten results like that. In regards to detail, I think the best way to punch things out with colored pencil is to use highlights. So, for example, in the eye, you could add some white as a highlight to give the shape/volume/texture/whatever more impact.
Great job!

OMG I can't believe you did this in pencil! This is an awesome pic, don't know why you wouldn't like it.... I like the shading around the whale, and especially the light-refractions from the waves on the whales back. It's realistic & artistic, and personally I like the close up, + humbacks are just cool, so of course i like this. :D (Big Grin) 8) (Cool)

The funny part of this signature exists solely in the 4th dimension, thus, you cannot comprehend it. :B

This is a very nice piece! I think it's gorgeous! I work in colored pencils a lot, so I know what it's like with the sharpening constantly. It does look more like a painting than something done with colored pencils, however. Awsome job!

Very lovely pencil work, especially on the bubbles! Those are fantastic! Though for some reason the back of the whale seems too straight and stiff for the lower arch of the body. I mean, I don't know what the photo looks like, but that just seemed a tad odd to me. Meh, ignore me. ^^
